Lachish is an amazing spot in Israel. It was hard for me to believe that there were so few other tourists exploring the area when I visited it with tour guide Sruly Jacobson. It is safe to say that Lachish is one of the better-kept secrets of the Bible, and of modern-day Israel.
Lachish is mentioned in II Kings 18,19, and 20. At the time, Chizkiyahu was the King of Israel and was responsible for the defense of the land. Sennacherib, the king of Assyria waged war with Israel as he entered the land in an attempt to conquer Jerusalem. A major battle took place in Lachish. Remnants of the battling ramp built by Sennacherib thousands of years ago leading up to Lachish can still be seen today!
Although the Assyrians conquered Lachish, they were unable to conquer Jerusalem as foretold by the prophet Isaiah. As per Isaiah’s instruction, Chizkiyahu prayed to God and awoke the next morning to find the entire army had miraculously died!
Just as prophecy came true in the times of the Bible, we are witnessing Biblical prophecy coming to life before our very eyes. If you have not yet been to Lachish, you have got to check it out. As my tour guide says, “seeing is believing”!
