From Suffering to Sanctuary: How You’re Transforming Holocaust Survivors’ Homes

As Holocaust survivors reach their final years, ensuring they live with dignity becomes increasingly urgent. These individuals endured unimaginable suffering and now face the challenges of aging, often in inadequate housing conditions. Supporting these survivors isn’t just providing aid—it’s honoring their resilience and ensuring they’re not forgotten.

Thanks to your generosity, January 2025 has been a month of transformation for six Holocaust survivors across Israel. Your support has helped rebuild lives and create safe, hygienic environments with the dignity these survivors deserve. Each renovation represents our commitment to honoring their past while improving their present circumstances.

Restoring Dignity: David’s Story

In Jerusalem, we met 87-year-old David*, a Holocaust survivor with a heart condition affecting his overall health and mobility. Like many Holocaust survivors, David’s experiences as a child left him with a tendency to hoard; as a result, he was living in difficult conditions in his rundown Jerusalem apartment. He shares his home with his daughter, who faces her own set of challenges in terms of mobility and mental health.

With your support, Tenufa Bakehila:

  • Cleared out the apartment and handled a cockroach infestation with pest control
  • Replaced the broken kitchen with a brand new one, enabling a safe hygienic space for food preparation
  • Installed a new door to replace the old rotten wooden one that allowed rain to flood the apartment

These repairs and care for his welfare have restored a sense of order and dignity in David’s home and life.

Your Impact Across Israel: January 2025

Your contributions extended beyond David to make meaningful differences in five other survivors’ lives:

  • Sarah in Jerusalem: Replaced hazardous floor tiles with new ones, fixed doors, sealed windows, and spackled and painted the apartment.
  • Leah in Bat Yam: Fixed walls and painted the apartment, sealed the shower and front door, and completed extensive shutters repairs.
  • Hannah in Bat Yam: Fixed toilet and shutters, spackled and painted the apartment.
  • Avi in Sderot: Added grab rail and suited toilet seat, removed shower and created accessible shower, and spackled and painted the shower room. Avi is a Holocaust survivor who had a stroke and uses a wheelchair, and lives with his elderly wife.
  • Esther in Bat Yam: Fixed walls and painted apartment, repaired broken furniture, and fixed windows.

Each renovation represents our commitment to ensuring that these survivors can live their remaining years in comfort, safety, and dignity.

We believe in transparency and want you to see exactly how your donations translate into real-world impact. Thank you for partnering with us in this vital work. We look forward to your continued generosity!
