On that terrible day, Hadar and Itay Berdichesky personified parental love and courage.
As terror swept through their kibbutz, their only thought was to protect their babies. They acted with astounding selflessness, securing the twins in a safe room to ensure their survival, even as they put their own lives on the line to defend their children and community from the attackers.
Though they perished, their legacy of love and sacrifice lives on through their children.
A Life-Changing Decision
For Ofir, the calling was immediate and spiritual. In that moment of devastating loss, she felt her sister speaking to her from heaven, knowing that these precious babies needed her to step forward.
Tom understood immediately too – there was no question about taking in their nephews.
Despite the overwhelming reality of raising five boys under the age of seven while navigating their own grief, the Alons embraced their new family with extraordinary love and commitment.
They welcomed the twins into their family, joining their three young sons to create a new family of seven.
The Daily Struggle

Ofir has left her career to care for five children under seven, while Tom works tirelessly as the sole provider. Their home has become, as Tom describes, “an actual kindergarten.”
Every day brings mounting expenses: endless diapers, food, clothing, medical needs, and the costs of therapy to help the family heal from trauma.
The loss of the twins’ parents is irreplaceable, but the Alons are determined to raise them in a home filled with love, stability, and the knowledge of their parents’ heroism. It’s a herculean task – and one they shouldn’t have to face alone.
